Creating Podcasts

Podcasting 101

Let’s face it, today’s students are rarely seen without being connected to some electronic device. Most often, they are listening to an iPod or texting on their cell phones. How do teachers of the 21st century use some of these technologies to help educate students? One way is through the use of podcasting. In this section, I’ll be covering the basics.

Here’s what I’ll be covering:

  • Basic hardware needs
  • Software for recording your podcast
  • Publishing your podcast

Hardware

Let’s start with the hardware requirements. Click on the video below for some hardware suggestions.

Software: Audacity

While there are many software programs available for recording and editing audio, I will be focusing on a popular program called Audacity. For someone new to podcasting, it is easy to use and it will help you create a good sounding podcast. Just as important, it is also FREE.

For those that are comfortable downloading and installing software, download Audacity here.

To view a demonstration of the download and install procedures, click HERE.

You’ll also need to download a file called LAME that allows Audacity to convert its project files into an .mp3 file. It might sound complicated, but not to worry. I’ll show you exactly what to do in my LAME download and installation tutorial HERE

The Basics

Now that we have downloaded and installed Audacity and LAME, we are ready to learn the basics of the software. The tutorials below will give you everything you need to create a quality podcast.
